I am not one of those people that believes you’ve got to have a massive house to be happy. In fact, I rather like a small space! It can be cozy and inviting and can meet all your needs without burdening you with a ton of debt (sounds like a win to me!). Of course, living in a small space does have a few challenges, mainly where does all your stuff go?! With the trend of simplified living increasing and tiny houses popping up all over the country, creative storage solutions are more useful than ever!
Let’s take a look at a few ideas that can make any small space feel like a spacious home.
This has got to be step number one if you’re downsizing your living space. You’ve got to also downsize your stuff! Your home will only hold so much before it no longer feels comfortable. And what’s the point of that? You want your home to be a retreat, which is a little hard to do if you’re surrounded by clutter. So, first thing’s first, go through your belongings, decide what you can live without and fill up the back of your car. If you’re feeling generous you can donate to your local shelter or to Goodwill. Or, if you’re looking to make a little extra money, there are a number of ways to sell your belongings online!
Don’t Get Hung Up On Closet Space
I know. We all love a nice, big closet. It’s an easy solution for clutter – just throw it in the closet! But if you’re simplifying and living smaller, you’re not likely to score big in the closet department. And that’s okay, too. There are lots of ways to store your clothes that don’t involve a closet. This is where the space under your bed can be a huge help! Baskets and drawers on wheels can fit nicely under your bed to hold clothes, shoes, accessories – whatever you can’t fit in your closet. You can purchase under-bed storage solutions or you can build your own easily enough.
Cabinet space isn’t easy to come by in a smaller home, but it doesn’t mean you have to get rid of all your kitchen gadgets and utensils. Make the best use of your wall space by hanging open shelves to store plates, glassware, pots, pans – anything you need in the kitchen!
One thing to note – because these shelves will hold fragile items which may also be heavy, make sure they are securely mounted to the wall. You can use heavy duty shelf brackets and drywall anchors if you are unsure how much weight your wall can support. The last thing you want is for all your plates to come crashing down if your shelves weren’t properly mounted!
Nooks & Crannies
I think finding storage solutions in all the nooks and crannies of a house is my favorite – I love anything that forces me to be a little creative and do some problem-solving! In a small space, you can’t overlook any area of your home because you can likely find storage solutions for all of them somewhere online! Consider hanging storage for the back of your doors, hooks for inside your cabinets, a storage ottoman for your seating area or even a hidden storage compartment in your coffee table! The possibilities are endless and, I think, kind of fun to create!
Ultimately, living in a small space will stretch your imagination a bit to make it work best for you. And you don’t have to get rid of all your possessions to make it comfortable. You simply need to look at things from a different perspective and make use of all those nooks and crannies!
