It’s my favorite time of year! I love a good fresh start, and the new year always makes me feel so hopeful for the next 365 days ahead. But I especially love it because, with every new year, there are new design trends to experiment with. And this year is no exception! From continuations of trends we’ve seen growing in the past few years to new ideas that we haven’t seen much of until now – there’s so much to be inspired by.
Let’s take a look at what I think are 5 of the most interesting trends for 2021.
Nature Meets Nostalgia in Rustic Vogue
This is a trend that’s been growing for quite a while. Rustic, stripped, natural woods meet industrial metal accents and vintage finds (my favorite design pieces!). It shares a few similarities with the farmhouse trend that is popular right now, but it’s a little more eclectic with a balance of old and new pieces. Think exposed beams or brick, reclaimed wood and original floorboards with a mix of patterns and a few vintage pieces.
Colors of the Year
I love seeing the colors of the year that paint companies put out every year! Sometimes, I instantly fall in love with them and other times, it takes me a little while to feel inspired. I have a mix of both this year with the Behr Elevated Comfort Color Palettes and the Pantone Colors of the Year. I love the warm colors in the Behr Collection – but how could I not when my branding fits nicely in the palette! 🙂
I was much more surprised by the Pantone Colors of the year – Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray – but I love the inspiration behind the choice: “A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.” You can’t really help but feel uplifted by the sunshine yellow, though I expect it’ll mostly be seen in accent pieces this year – the color might be a little too bright to paint a whole room! But one great way to use the color combo would be to use the Ultimate Gray on your walls and bring the Illuminating Yellow into the room in your fabrics – pillows and window treatments. What’s great about this color combo is it has a little versatility – you could bring in a blue for a third color or bring in black for a more contemporary feel.
It’s obvious that people weren’t able to get out and travel much in 2020, because one of the trends growing in popularity for 2021 introduces a lot of tropical influences. It’s as if everyone decided, “If we can’t go on vacation, then we’ll bring vacation home!” The tropical feel is being seen in a more modern take on florals with tropical flowers and greenery in fabrics and wallpapers and lots of bright, cheery colors. You can almost smell that island breeze just looking at them!
Home Office Makeovers
2020 drastically changed the way we work, causing many to work remotely from home which has inspired a lot of home office makeovers. The home office is quickly becoming one of the most important spaces in the home after years of being a bit of an afterthought. I think we’ll be seeing a lot of design elements targeted at home offices for quite some time.
We’ve Got the Blues
Aligning with the tropical getaway trend, it looks like Ocean Blues are a top trend for 2021 as well! I’m excited about this one – blue is one of my favorite colors! Ocean blues are soothing and peaceful, and give the feeling of a poolside getaway (who couldn’t use one of those?!). They’re perfect for your bedroom to create a space that is relaxing and comfortable but also still has a luxurious feel to it. Benjamin Moore is featuring a beautiful Aegean Teal as it’s Color of the Year that would be lovely in any room!
No matter what your personal style, it’s always fun to try new things. Get creative with your space and see how you can apply some of 2021’s design trends to your decor!
